Historic Yates Mill County Park: A Window into North Carolina’s Past

Overview of Historic Yates Mill County Park

Nestled in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina, Historic Yates Mill County Park spans 174 acres and offers visitors a unique blend of cultural history and natural beauty. At its core lies Yates Mill, a fully restored, water-powered gristmill dating back to circa 1756—the last of its kind in Wake County.

The park not only showcases this historic mill but also features diverse hiking trails, a serene 20-acre millpond, and the A.E. Finley Center for Education and Research, which houses interactive exhibits on milling and local ecology. Click here

History of Historic Yates Mill County Park

The origins of Yates Mill trace back to 1756 when Samuel Pearson established the mill on Steep Hill Creek. Over the centuries, the mill underwent various ownerships and technological advancements, including the addition of a sawmill in the 1840s.

The Yates family acquired the property in 1869, operating it until 1948. After a period of dormancy and near destruction due to a dam failure in 1996, restoration efforts led by Yates Mill Associates culminated in 2005, reviving the mill as a functional educational landmark.
